Montavious Smith, who was 22-years old at the time, was arrested on November 3 at the Wolfchase Galleria for refusing to remove his hooded sweatshirt. Smith was accused by security for breaking the mall's code of conduct and dress code, prompting his removal. Believing the incident was racially charged, Smith returned to the mall, prompting his arrest by Memphis police.
This event prompted the formation of Team Roc, Roc Nation's social justice and philanthropy department, aimed at supporting the athletes and entertainers represented by the company in their commitment to demanding justice in society. Roc Nation and Team Roc assisted in procuring pro bono legal assistance from high-profile attorneys. Additionally, Memphis native Yo Gotti publicly condemned the arrests. Roc Nation and Team Roc officials also met with mall leadership on potential amendments to the dress code policies.
